Sorry it has been so long since last I blogged but I have been a bit busy seeing the sites of the Gold Coast. Yes, I now have wheels! Two that is and granted it is not my red Camry, it is a ride other than the bus and I love it. It gets great gas mileage, has a basket and is called a pushbike in Australia. My pushbike and I have already traveled several miles.

After an interview with the Red Cross I have been cleared to do volunteer work here on the Gold Coast. I have chosen to help with the delivery of Meals on Wheels and Sailability.

For Meals on Wheels I ride with Anne, a 69-year-old retired nurse who works part time at a nursing home 4 nights a week to supplement her income. She wears a wig because 9 months ago she decided to shave her head for the Leukemia drive. It was on her “bucket list” she said. We deliver to 7 or 8 elderly people who pay $8 for a box meal, a soup and a dessert. The other morning we were delivering to Mr. Martin. We rang the doorbell, knocked on the door, called out “Meals on Wheels” but no one answered. We began to walk away when we heard him tapping on the window and telling us he was coming. A few minutes later a white-haired ninety-year old grumpy little man answered the door in his speedo underwear and a t-shirt. I thought he would be scrambling for a housecoat but no he stood there talking to us as if he were fully clothed. Another lady we visited tried to sell me a delivery movie service and another was thrilled when we arrived so she could have her dessert with her morning tea. You just never know.

The Sailability is a program just down the rode at the local marina where people with disabilities come and get the chance to sail. Depending on their disability they can sail on their own or with some one. There are two hoists for those that are not able to get in and out of the boats without help. It is organized chaos that serves some fifty people with various levels of disabilities. The smiles on their faces while sailing up and down the bay is simply priceless. I love this activity and I am learning a lot about sailing. I can now tie a sailboat to the dock. Who knows what I will learn next week.

We have been meeting lots of nice people. Last weekend we were invited to go camping with 11 other John Deere couples and their children-lots of children. One of the guys let us borrow a tent, two bag chairs, a tarp and a cooler and off we went. The “caravan” - campground
was only about 45 mins south of where we live in the Australian state of New South Wales. We stayed right on the Tweed River, which was only about 5 minutes from the ocean. Norman was able to catch a flat head and one of the guys cooked it for him. We saw lots of river lizards, whales, a huge school of dolphins, a lighthouse, and some beautiful water. The weather was perfect and the people were very welcoming. We played our first game of cricket. Norman caught a pop fly in his hat. It was a great weekend and I am marking that as one of the spots to see for all visitors.

On Tuesday, November 1st I celebrated my first Melbourne Cup Day. It is a huge day not just in Melbourne but also throughout all of Australia. Many businesses close, restaurants have special luncheons, and work stops everywhere (even at John Deere) to watch this famous horse race. It is much like the Kentucky Derby, with all the women making a fashion statement with new frocks and pretty hats. Every group that gathers has a “Sweep”. In a Sweep you pay $1, $2 or $5 dollars to draw the name of a horse. If your horse wins or places then you win a small amount of money. My horse led at the very beginning but did not even place at the end. Our complex had a very nice potluck luncheon. I met many new people and tasted the dessert of Australia, Pavalova. It was delicious. The lady in the pretty hat in the pictures above was a nurse in Dallas, Texas back in 1963. She worked at the hospital where they took President Kennedy when he was shot.

Exercising is going well. I am still enjoying my running/workout in the park and I have also started water aerobics two days a week. It is so much fun and a good workout, too.

The birds and pelicans are just a short ride on my bike to Charis’s Seafood. They congregate there every day for a 1:30 feeding. See FB for video.

Church is good and we are growing to love our little congregation of Christians here in Australia.

This week has been very interesting. On Thursday I attended a Ladies Bible study with the ladies from the church where we have been attending. The day before I mapped out the bus route that I should take. The Bible study was @ 10:30. In order to get there on time I had to leave the house @ 8:20. I had arranged for Jenny (the wife of the preacher-preacher’s wives prefer to be referred by their own names than merely “the preacher’s wife” , right, Kay??) to pick me up from the Varsity Lakes bus stop. The first part of the trip went as planned, arriving at my transfer station ahead of schedule. From there I simply walked across the street to catch my connection-which was suppose to be the 754 to Varsity Lakes. I waited a few minutes, boarded the 754 and I was on my way again. After an hour's drive and seeing several signs for Varsity Lakes, I asked the bus driver if we would be stopping at Varsity Lakes station. He informed me that the bus I was on did not stop at Varsity Lakes. I asked him how I could get there and he told me where I should get off and what bus I should take from there. Once I was off the bus I gave Jenny a call to tell her where I was and that I would be a little late getting to Varsity Lakes. She told me she was not far from where I was, to stay put and she would be there in 5 minutes. We were only a few minutes late, which really didn't matter. Australians are going to be having tea before and after any occasion.

The Bible study was at a young woman’s home. There were 10 women who attended and several little ones. The lesson was about fear. She had really prepared for the lesson, including making copies of the lesson for each of us. Many women shared what they feared the most. The lady next to me was from Russia and had a Russian Bible. She asked me whether the scripture was in the Old or New Testament. Her name was Olga. She was afraid of snakes. Another woman was afraid of the dark-she was two small children and another due any time. Miandrea was afraid of sharks-she lives on the ocean. Jenny was afraid of spiders. Hana was afraid of being alone - her mother had left she and her sister alone many times when they were very young. She was so opened and honest with her struggles. She is another home schooler and friend of Jenny’s through a home school group. She and her family escaped from Prague when the communism rule fell in Czech Republic back in the early nineties. All of these ladies are so precious and even though our backgrounds are very different we all struggle with many of the same issues. While talking with Hana I found out she lived about 10 mins. from Hollywell in the community of Helensvale. She offered to take me to the bus station in Helensvale, to which I gladly accepted. On our ride back Hana also told me of a small group mid-week Bible study in Helensvale, which would be a lot closer than Merrimac. I plan on checking it out this Wed. evening.

While I was waiting on my bus to arrive I walked over to the local fair (mall) where I walked up to the McKy counter and asked, “Do you have Happy Meals?” She said. “Yes.” I said, “I would like a Happy Meal and a diet Coke, please.” Then I enjoyed the most delicious hamburger (fresh bun, a thin patty, lots of ketchup and a pickle) and hot French fries with lots of salt. YumYum.

Thanks to all of you who have been praying for me. This week has brought many new friends and Christian fellowship, both of which I was really longing to have.

On Friday, I attended my first High Tea. It was very much like a luncheon with finger sandwiches, tiered serving trays at each table with a variety of sweets, champagne, and of course tea. There was water available for those non-drinkers-which included me and Mimi, the lady that had graciously invited me to walk over with her and to sit at her table since I did not know any one. About 90 women attended this fund raiser for the Leukemia Foundations. There was a lady singer (she was at least 70), a fashion show, a raffle that included many nice prizes (Mimi-won a bottle of champagne-she is probably 75) and lots of fellowship. It began at 11 and finished around 2:30. Each of us received a goodie bag with lots of catalogs, a note pad, a pen, a diary and a nice heart-shaped compact mirror. I have included some random pictures of this event, including some of the models for the fashion show. I also wanted to show you what I wore-thus the picture of me in the mirror. Lots of white and black outfits but mine was rather colorful and I did receive many compliments.

I have done some baking this week. I made tea cakes for Norman's office, white chocolate covered oreos and puffed pastry sticks dipped in white chocolate-I took these to the High Tea. They were a success!

As I have told you before this apartment is very well equipped, however, there are a few missing items. I have been trying to use what we have rather than buying these items. I have found a plastic glass works well as a rolling pin and a wine glass turned upside down is perfect for cutting cookies. Paper clips make great chip clips. When we visited Luke in Grenada I learned that you never throw away any containers-they are very useful-empty oatmeal holds my flour, an empty tomato sauce jar holds my ground coffee and an empty yogurt containers with lids are great for storing leftovers. Thanks, Luke for the helpful tip.

On Friday Norman and I attended our first apartment social. They have one on the first Friday of each month and we felt that this would be a good way to meet some of our neighbors. The flyer had said to bring nibbles and drinks. I stressed somewhat on what to bring. I wanted to make a good first impression. I decided on Brownie Bites and Roasted Cinnamon/Sugared Almonds. I arranged the cookies on one of my pretty red trays and put the almonds in a red and white striped bowl. We walked over to the pool area with our nibbles and bottled water. Needless to say we were the only ones there with bottled water. My pretty tray and bowl were the only red on the table, everything else was white and my nibbles were the only sweets-everything else was salty. Later when one of the ladies was passing my cinnamon sugared almonds around, not knowing I was the one that had brought them, she said, "I am not sure what these are but ..." to which another lady replied I don't know either but they don't look very appetizing. (They did sort of resemble Kangaroo droppings but I thought they tasted pretty good). So much for first impressions.

Even though the nibbles were a flop, we did meet some of our neighbors and I have been invited to a High Tea Leukemia Benefit on Friday. Not sure what a High Tea is but you can rest assured I will be googling it before Friday!

We had planned to visit Tamborine Mountain on Saturday but we woke up to a thunderstorm and decided to postpone that adventure. Instead, we went to look at bicycles and we bought Norman a hat. This hat is suppose to protect his neck and ears from the sun. On the way home he was reading all about the hat and how to care for it. The instructions said - "It is shower proof." I looked at Norman and said, "Why would anyone get in the shower with their hat?" If they meant rain they should have said rain. (I am learning). I must say he does look rather handsome in it, even in the shower.

Today we went back to the tiny church on the Gold Coast. Wayne, the preacher had emailed and called to tell us they were having a potluck in honor of the guest speaker from Fiji. I decided to make my new favorite recipe Orzo Salad, Luke's old favorite - Chili Cheese Frito Salad (couldn't find Fritos so had to substitute the only spicy corn chips I could find), stuffed eggs and I took the leftover roasted cinnamon almonds and brownie bites for dessert. I came home with empty dishes. They loved it all!!!

We have been praying about where to go to church long before we got here. We wanted to be where the Lord wanted us to be. I preferably did not want to be in a small church - One of those "Lord, put me where you want me to be but..." request. We had visited a larger congregation last Sunday but we decided to go back to the small church. And today I felt at peace and at home there. The guest speaker was very passionate about his work in Fiji and brought a very good lesson. The people are so precious and always welcome with a hug, as if they are truly glad you are there. I have included a picture of the congregation. And even though they are very small the singing is outstanding and the song leader is very enthusiastic. Some of the songs we know but they may sing a little differently and some are new to us but are very beautiful.

**On a side note-On this day especially I am praising God for the amazing journey He has allowed me to experience over the past year. He has been my refuge and strength, my ever-present help in trouble, my fortress, my portion, my deliverer, my mighty rock. He has sustained us every step of the way. "He has lifted us up out of an horrible pit, He has established our goings. He has put a new song in our hearts, even praise unto our God. (Psalm 40:1- 3). He has been faithful. I am believing Him and praising Him for the wonders He has done, is doing and will continue to do. And many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. 2 Corinthians 1:11 Thank you to all who have prayed for us over these past 365 days. Amen, amen and amen.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not sleep all the time as suggested in some of the previous blogs I have read on this site. Due to some misinformation I have decided to start contributing occasionally an editorial. Mary Jo has adapted to retirement quicker than I could have imagined, but I am reaping the benefits as I have breakfast each morning and a great dinner each night. She has really become a gourmet cook since we have been here. Tonight we had some funny little round beans with some strange shaped pasta with several types of herbs and spices mixed in a huge metal bowl and served on a red plate. It was delicious. I am lucky to have such a wonderful wife and great cook.

Work is going well. Starts at 6:15 AM and usually ends around the same time each night. I have been traveling to some exotic places like Wagga Wagga. (Home of many crows). Saw more sheep than you could count. It is amazing how much wool they have this time of year, but many are being sheared now. Then I flew up north and stayed in one of the farming communities next to the Great Barrier Reef. They raise sugar cane in this area along with bananas and mangoes. Did not go out on the reef as we are saving that trip for when someone comes to visit.

Although this is an English speaking country there seems to be several dialects. Some are easy to understand. Others talk so fast and roll their words making it very difficult for me to understand. They have slang names for almost everything. Last week, I was on a road trip with two guys and we stopped for them to have a cigarette or fag as they call them. They were standing in front of the car talking with another guy and I decided to get something out of my computer bag in the trunk of the car. I walked around back and yelled for Mark the driver to pop the trunk. He said, "What did you say?" I tapped the trunk with my hand and said, "Pop your trunk." They all busted out laughing. He finally unlocked the trunk and then walked over to me and said, "You might want to watch what your saying as trunk over here means the man's private parts (he didn't actually call it that but Mary Jo wouldn't let me write his exact words). They call the trunk of the car the boot and the hood is the bonnet.

They actually keep up with the United States pretty well. They are constantly asking about our President and the economy. Had a great discussion last week with a group of five guys at dinner. I asked them about this observation... after living here a short while, seeing the massive amount of natural resources this county has, and the small number of people they have to defend it, the huge investments that China is making in Australian's mining industry, were they afraid that they would wake up one morning and see thousands of troop ships surrounding the country with millions of Chinese soldiers coming to claim there businesses. They said no they would go after America first. Don't think so, distance is much less to Australia. Unfortunately it wouldn't make any difference as we have been allies to all conflicts for a long time, but it made for some good discussion.

Mary Jo and I are trying a great deal of first. In fact last night she cut my hair for the first time ever in our 36 yrs of marriage. Saved $16+ and didn't have one cross word. Probably because she put masking tape over my month before we started. I will let her finish this story and give you a picture or two. Well let me just say opinions expressed by this writer might not necessarily be the views of the regular blogger...

I have been busy reading, running and trying to learn cook. We have had stuffed peppers, tacos, and orzo salad. I have learned that garbanzo beans are the same as chickpeas (thanks, Sara) and that risoni is the same as orzo (the Internet has a world of information about everything I should know but don't). I also learned how to make French pressed coffee with a quick online lesson from Samuel.

Yesterday I decided to try the bus. I topped off my go card online and called about the bus times for the bus stop just outside our complex. She told me that the bus ran on the half hour - I am thinking o'clock and thirty but when I reached the bus stop the schedule read 2:21 and 2:51, needless to say I missed the 21 and had to wait for the 51. When I got on the bus I touched my card to the machine - I had learned how to do this when I was here back at the beginning of the summer riding the River Cats - touch on-touch off. The machine made a beep beep, so I asked the bus driver what that meant and in a grumpy voice he replied, "I don't know. What does it say? I can't read it!!!" (the machine was not facing him). At this point the machine read, "card already touched" so I just had a seat. When I touched it to get off the bus it said "insufficient funds"-I tried to explain to the bus driver that I had just topped it off online to which he replied, "It says you have insufficient funds! If an inspector gets on the bus you will be fined for not paying!"- He didn't bother to tell me that it took 48 hrs. for the online topping to clear or that I could pay cash. On the way back I boarded the bus, paid cash and asked this driver (a different one) if this was the bus to Columbus St. to which he replied, "I don't know where Columbus St is." - (there are two Columbus Street stops on his route) - one going and one coming!!! Thankfully, another rider helped me out and told me it was the correct bus for my stop. Not a good first experience with the bus drivers. However, I did not let the rudeness deter me from riding it again today. This time I did much better-only reprimanded for trying to load the bus from the back instead of the front-both have top on/off machines. Samuel, sound like the taxi drivers in Chicago? I am not a city girl!

Today when I went to the store they had 1 litre cokes with different names on each-advertising to share a coke with... the only two that I could find were Luke and Nick-lots of good memories of those two.

The picture of Norman by Marilyn is a two-fold story...first it is to show you his haircut-good thing he can't see the gaps in the back.(haha) Second, this picture is huge, it hangs just outside the master bathroom door, and has hung there since before we moved in three weeks ago. Well the other day Norman was walking into the bathroom and he hollered back to me, "Hey have you seen this picture of Marilyn Monroe here in the hall?" I just busted out laughing and said, "Yep, she's been there every time you have gone in and out of that bathroom. Hello, Norman.

Well Monday afternoon it hit me...that sickness you get when you are far, far from home and you miss everyone so much. By Tuesday I was a basket case and as I did my morning walk (did not feel like running) the tears continued to flow from underneath my sunglasses. I wondered if anyone noticed. Did they know that I was an American missing my family? It's a school holiday here - since the 17th of September until the 3rd of October, so the park was filled with families, children laughing, people talking and lots of grandparents with their grands. Tears flowed again and then the guilt came-what a beautiful place, what a wonderful opportunity, how could you be so homesick in such a place?

Norman picked up on it. He really hated to be leaving for the week but he did leave me his car. And my mom - she knew right away and said "I hate you are homesick but it won't last", and she was right. It didn't.

Word must have gotten out (although no one is admitting it) because I heard from 3 out of the 4 children (I know the other one was thinking about me too, but he was working hard to make some money so he can come see his Mama) plus the grands. I am better although the news from home today was not good - my dear Aunt Sarah has cancer in her spine. Please pray for her and my dad is having some test done, as well. My family has had quite a year but God has been faithful and He will see us through-every step of the way. Thank you, Jesus!!!

On a brighter note...I have a new best friend. His name is Tom. He is officially known as Tom Tom, but since the Aussie"s tend to shorten everything, we will just call him Tom. He travels with me in the car every where I go. He tells me when to turn right, when to turn left, where to go on the gazillion round a bouts and he even makes a trumpet sound when I exceed the speed limit. He speaks in a calm voice. He never tells me that I am scaring him to death when I tend to veer to much to the left and he never fusses at me for using the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal. I think I will keep him around while I am here.

I have taken some random pictures of our quint little Paradise Point. It is made up of two streets with one street facing the beautiful park I am always talking about. It has all kinds of places to eat, a post (short for post office), a fish and meat market, a chemist (drug store) a few doctor's offices, and a Golden Casket - it's like a convenience store. It even has a Baskin Robins but we have been going to the Gelato Store - less fat you know. The picture of the syringe deposal box was taken in the bathroom at the park-not sure why it is there but ...

The money is very neat - each denomination of paper money is a different color and a different length, with the fifty being the longest (that I have seen so far) The small gold coin is two dollars. The large gold coin is one dollar. The silver coins are from largest to smallest - 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents. Sorry, Ma, no quarters. They round up or down depending on the amount of your purchase because of the lack of a one cent coin. It has been easy to use but very costly!!!!!

Yesterday I bought some plants to replace the plastic ones on the patio. Today I potted them in the containers. They look very nice-now if they will just live. Not sure what the tall plant in our back garden is called but it grows like a sunflower, straight up. I took a picture of one that is just coming up so you can see the contrast in size.

Well we only got to listen to about half of the game because of internet troubles-but I guess it's just as well. We enjoyed another good church service on Sunday with tea and visiting again afterwards. Jenny got to meet everyone there. After church we grabbed a quick bite to eat and then went on a whale watching excursion. We really got to see a lot of action-4 whales at one time, flapping tails and white belles, and even a dolphin that swam right along side the boat. The trip out and back was nice, too. The weather was perfect.

On Monday I took another stroll to Big W to get another smoothie machine (small blender) I had brought mine from home and tried to use it with just an adapter and not a converter-yep just like they warned us in our cultural class-if you plug in a 110 appliance to a 240 plug without a converter it will FRY!!!!! and so it did.

Monday night's menu was Butternut Pumpkin Squash Soup, Lentil Burgers on multi-grain buns and a salad. Let's just say it was not one of Norman's favorites. I was talking about how good I thought the Butternut Pumpkin Squash and Norman picked up his bowl and said, "Well here you can have my baby poop." Guess I will be studying the cookbook for some other recipes.

Tuesday we were up and off to the airport at 4am. Norman had his first trip and his flight was at 6:00. He drove to the airport and I drove back home - SOLO!!!! I was quite proud. I only had to circle the airport once due to a missed left out of the arrival/departure area. The GPS was a big help. Norman will be home on Thursday. I am trying to do some reading.

Today (Wednesday) I did venture out in the car to Helensvale where I found a Kmart, Target, Coles, and of course Woolys. I was able to purchase a coffee pot for $12 which I thought was pretty good considering the cheapest one at Big W's was $48. And beings that we will have to leave it here I did not want to invest to much.

I have decided to start posting my pics on FB due to the length of time it takes to upload pictures on the blog.

Well I am an unofficial Aussie driver-meaning I have had two driving lessons and I still us the windshield wipers as the turn signal. I have driven once since my driving class with Norman to the market. He drove home.

On Wednesday I fixed the standard salad and baked potato with watermelon/grapes because we were pressed for time since we were meeting Jenny and Wayne from church to attend the Wednesday evening devo/prayer meeting. They meet in someone's home so we were going to follow them. It was at the home of another couple who also has 4 children, who by the way were just getting over the chicken-pox. Didn't get the heads up on that until we got there. They were very welcoming and I had a very nice conservation with Jenny. The guys met in one room and the ladies met in another. They seem to really love the Lord and the Bible.

Thursday Norman worked from home. We got up early and I took him on my route that I run everyday-we walked. We stopped to get Norman a cup of coffee and me a loaf of bread from the bakery. Did I say that I miss my multigrain thin sliced Italian bread from Publix? After our short stop we sat in the park and watched all the people out and around. It was nice.

Our shipment was suppose to arrive between 12:00-12: 30. They arrived around 3:00 in a tiny truck which delivered our 12 small boxes of stuff. WE OVER PACKED!!!! Not sure what I was thinking but I brought 6 regular size tubes of toothpaste, not to mention the 6 travel size, 5 large bottles of baby powder, 4 - 25oz bottles of shampoo, along with several trial size, 4 bottles of hair gel, 3 bottles hand soap, 6 extra toothbrushes and 16 bars of soap. So for those of you that plan to come, no need to bring these items. We were able to find a place for everything including the 20+shoes I brought-see picture of my shoes that go with the decor-I am thinking about becoming an interior designer.LOL After several hours we finally got everything put in its place-pics of frig, which by the way is non-magnetic!!! Special note to Kay and Harold-picture taken(see above) for proof of your position on the refrigerator. Most of my verses that I had reprinted on red paper are placed strategically about the apartment. Kimberly, my TOTY looks great on the entertainment center, Cheri, our picture with one of my favorite verses on it has a special place in the entryway and the photos you or Jim took at sunrise of Florida Park look great under the glass on top of the center piece in the living area. Brenda, I have my prayer angel in the entryway, too. Lynne, the prayer rock is on the nightstand by my bed. The red spatula I bought about 4 years ago after listening to the late Barbara Johnson's book, "Stick a Gerainm in Your Hat and Be Happy". It has been in my kitchen at home and fit right into my kitchen here. The three photo albums are books that I had made from different trips we have taken. Can you believe they match perfectly?? (red/black). The big book is a book that Norman's dad received when he was stationed here in Brisbane during WWII. It has a kangaroo on the front and is entitled Displaying Australia and New Guinea. It has lots of pictures of Brisbane as well as many other places throughout Australia. It has an full page picture of General Douglas MacArthur. Who would have ever thought we would be in the same place as his dad some over 65 years later?

With family photos scattered throughout it now feels more like home. Thanks everyone for helping me decorate the apartment. Now I can see you all in just a step or two.

It has been really neat how God has (as always) put Christian in our paths over these first few days, not just with visit to church but in out everyday activities. First we went to open an account at the bank on Thursday and the girl that was helping us was talking about working at the bank and how blessed she was to work there. My ears immediately perked up and about that time she said, "I was noticing your bracelet". It was the one you had given me, Cheri, with all the different crossing on it. I said yes it has all different kinds of crosses to which she replied, "Any particular reason you wear it?" And I said, "Well, because I love the Lord. She said, "Me too!" I said, "I thought you were a Christian." It was really neat because then she began to tell us about how she had become a Christian. Then Friday night we had two girls come over that work for John Deere-Kim, who lives here in Brisbane and Jenny, who is here from the states. Jenny is spending the weekend with us and she has been such a delight to have as our very first visitor. (See Luke-people do come for visits to Australia). We sat down for dinner and began to talk. They both mentioned the churches that they attend and how God had done this or that in their lives. It was really neat. Jenny and I went for a long run today. She and I had a good conversation about the Lord. What a blessing!! He is sooooo faithful.

For dinner on Friday night I think I would have made Sara and Ryan proud - see pics above of my prep dishes for scrimp scampi, broiled asparagus, corn on the cob, fresh French bread, salad and blond Texas sheet cake. For the appetizer I served a French baguette thinly sliced with basil pesto, tasty cheese and diced tomatoes. It was rather yummy if I do say so myself and actually I really enjoyed cooking. (Note to Norman children-see I can cook something other than hamburger helper and lean cuisines)

Today after our run, we just kicked back and relaxed, walked down to our favorite fish and chips place-a one man operating hole in the wall place. The man is very gruff and straight forward but his fish and calamari is delicious. We had the sweetlips-last week we had it battered and this week we tried the crumbed. After that Jenny went to the pool, Norman took a nap and I blogged. Then we loaded up the red and white lawn chairs drove down to Surfers Paradise with all the other spring breakers on the Gold Coast. The waves were big and the weather was perfect. We stayed about an hour, came back and had dinner at Paradise Point were they were having a Taste of the Gold Coast, complete with fire twirlers, belly dancers, a roadster car display, and a walking three-man band. The road was blocked and the tables were set up in the middle of the street with white tablecloths and candles. It was very festive. Of course, none of us had a camera.

Everyone has turned in and I must, too. Tennessee plays Florida in the morning @ 5:30 and I don't want to miss that!! Good luck to all you Gator Fans-Rocky Top you'll always be home sweet home to me!!!! Love you all.

Well since I last posted I have taken a driving class, walked to the market several times, done some cooking and I have run several miles.

I will begin with the driving class...I drove for exactly one hour(I hate to tell these folks but a one hour driving lesson is not going to erase 41 years of right-handed driving-this is a very old dog they are teaching here and I must say this is going to be quite a trick for me to learn) Anyway, we went through several turns and round a bouts and even some straight aways-I've got those down pretty good. Daddy, you would have loved the car. The passenger's side had its own accelerator and brake. And I know you are not going to believe this but he did not have to brake ONCE, however, he did have to accelerate and grab the steering wheel a few times. He says, "Alvays revember the traffic is on your RIGHT!"(He was from Germany) At the end of the lesson he asked when I wanted to schedule my next lesson. I told him I was not sure if JD would pay for another. He said, "Oh the company pays?" He made quick call and suggested that I have another session. Not sure if this was due to my driving or to the fact that JD would give him another $65. Either way, I am sure I could use a little more practice on those round a bouts. I have my next session today @ 1:00.

As I said before this place is convenient to everything. I have walked to the market several times. But I must remember that the trip back is always much longer with several bags of groceries!!! Building those arm muscles. On Saturday when Norman and I went to the grocery store (Coles) I felt a bit overwhelmed and missed my Publix. But when I went on Monday I found Wooly's (Woolworths) which seemed to have pretty much everything you would need. No worries, if they did not have something there was a bakery, a meat market and a fruit and veggie stand right next door. I felt much better. Don't get me wrong - it is NOT Publix. I was at the deli getting some lunch meat and the lady asked me how much I needed-I told her about half a pound but that I had no idea what that was in kilograms(I mean grams)-she had no idea either so she said I will cut and you tell me when. This worked out great. I got about 300 kg(oops I mean grams again-someone just informed me that would be about 660 lbs of meat) so now I know for next time. I cannot imagine living in a country where you do not speak the same language!!!! It is hard enough with the different terms, measurements and driving!!!!! But I am NOT complaining. I do love it here and I am learning so much.

Every morning I go for a long run through a very nice park. Lots of people out walking their dogs-every kind of dog imaginable. Throughout the park they have little exercising stations.(see pictures above) When I am finished with my run I do 100 reps on most of these-except the butterfly press-barely 10-as you push you are lifting yourself up, same for the chair where you can sit in one and push up and the other chair you sit and pull down-there again you are lifting your weight-I AM HEAVY!!!!!! Love the glider, the hip swinger, stair-stepper and the rowing machine.

So far I have managed to cook two meals: 1) The first was chicken kabobs w/onion, bell pepper, and pineapple, served with roasted veggies and a salad w/balsamic/oil dressing(see pics above). Notice the touch of orange slices on the glasses. This was suppose to be done on the barbie however, after many tries of turning the knobs and hearing the clicking noise, I realized their was no propane bottle. Thus, I reverted to the oven which was like trying to set the clock on a VCR!!! You turn one knob that has these choices-light, conventional, gentle bake, grill, rapid, fan plus, fan grill. The other knob says 0, 100, 150, 200, 250 and then a square with 3 flames(I figured out this must be broil) Don't they know I only cook on high or off??? 2) The next meal was guacamole pizza w/onions, tomatoes, pineapple, chicken, and feta. This was served with broccoli and a watermelon/feta/balsamic vinegar salad(see pic above). The other pics are of Norman's breakfast-rasin bread/oats/orange slices. I am becoming quite the housewife making him breakfast every morning and fixing him a sack lunch. LOL

The other pictures are of the beautiful full moon out our back door-picture does not do it justice but the reflection on the water was beautiful!!!

Oh and we have Skinny Milk-wonder if that has a guarantee with it. And of course the "tasty cheese"???? As opposed to "un" tasty cheese??

Anyway it is time for my driving class so I had better go. Don't want to miss a minutes instruction. Miss you all and can't wait to have our first visitors.

I wanted to start with this picture. All throughout our apartment there are sayings but this is my favorite. I am so blessed to have you all as friends. Thank you so much for your comments and encouragement since we left the USA. It is comforting to know that even though we are so very far from home that a message from you all is just a click away. Please keep the clicks coming.

When Norman took this job he said "We will have to journal every day" Well his part of the "we" is asleep on the couch soooooo ....This will be our(my) first official entry into the journal.

After a week and a half delay in our departure we were finally cleared to come to Australia on Tuesday morning the 6th of September. We were able to rebook our flights for the very next day. We wanted to get on down here before they changed their minds or we lost ours. We arrived at the ATL airport American Airlines ticket counter only to find out that we had NO ticket number. After an hour of phone calls, being put on hold, dropping the line just as we gave the phone to the clerk and having to call again and be put on hold for another 10 mins...we were confirmed. This rest of the trip was very pleasant. Our seats were excellent, food was typical, and the timed passed much quicker than before.

We arrived in Brisbane @ 4:50 (10mins ahead of schedule), got our luggage, went through customs, met our limo driver and were on the road by 5:30. Unbelievable!!!

It took us about an hour to arrive at our new home in Hollywell Queenlands. It is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Our view is magnificent and we are within walking distance to Big W (Wal Mart in disguise) Target and Woolworths (grocery store) .

To all my Georgia fan friends the apartment is completed decorated in red and black and I mean COMPLETELY!!! We have a red couch, red lamps, red place mats, red dishes, red towels, red ceiling, red toothbrush holder, red scissors, red first aide kit, red hot water bottle and even a red vacuum cleaner!!!! Black is thrown in for accents throughout. It makes me laugh - it is all the stuff you see in a department store and love but would never buy. And although I am still by far a Tennessee fan through and through I am thankful it is not done in orange and white.

Friday was mostly spent unpacking suitcases and getting acclimated to the time. We went to bed about 7:00. Saturday we were awake at 4 and were able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise just before 6. I went for a nice long run to Paradise Island through a nice park with 8 different exercise stations along the way. After that Norman and I ventured out to Big W and Woolworths for some food and supplies. We had dinner with Sheryl, the HR person from John Deere who had been so helpful to us when we were here back at the beginning of the summer.

Today we drove about 25 mins. to Merrimac and met with the Gold Coast Church of Christ, a small but very warm and friendly congregation. Had tea and coffee afterwards and met some nice folks there. We came back a different way and it was a little bit shorter. I took a break from this blog and went for a long run and when I got back the other part of "we" was still asleep. Guess he will have a long night.

Well that should pretty much catch you up on the life and times of the Norman's Down Under Adventure. Oh by the way we have the most beautiful lorikeets in our backyard. If I can get them to be still long enough for me to take a picture I will post one. They are so colorful!!!

Any weary souls out there?

Any weary souls out there? I am weary. I hesitate to say that because I know so many people who are experiencing some really difficult situations and my heart aches for each of these. I called my mom(and prayer warrior) this morning and she prayed with me. Later I went on my morning run. I decided to do a little extra today before the weather got bad. I was listening to my shuffle when Josh Groban's song, "You Raise Me Up" came on. I have listened to this song a least 100 times but today the Lord spoke to me through Josh's beautiful voice. I began to cry out to God - thanking Him over and over for raising me up every time. EVERY TIME !!!

The song finished and then it began to play again, as if God were saying, "If you did not get it the first time-here it is again!!!" (I had accidently recorded it twice). I couldn't help but laugh. I love God and His wonderful sense of humor.

Thank you, God for raising me up so I can stand on mountains. Thank you, God for raising me up so I can walk on stormy seas. Thank you,God for giving me strength. And God I thank you for doing the same for all those that you and I know that are hurting so badly. In Jesus' name!

WOW!!! I was not expecting this to hit me like it did. I woke up this morning at 2:00-wide awake. At 5:30 I decided to get on up. I went to the drawer and pulled out Samuel's baby book to see what time he was born. I began to read some of the things I had written - details about his birth, what he did and when, his first Christmas, first birthday and the day he was baptized.

Needless to say the tears began to flow as I read and remembered all the little things he did-watched his Tennessee beat Kentucky for the SEC title when he was just 5 hours old,smiled at 9 days, held is head up at 4wks,first Road Trip at just over a month old, laughed all the time at 3 and a half months, cut his first tooth at 4 months, crawled and said "Dada" at 6 months, said "Momma" at 9 months(not sure why they always say "Dada" first when we spend about twice as much time with them), sang with perfect pitch at 12 months, took first step at 13 months and so on.

And so the days were filled, watching him grow. Samuel, you are such a blessing to me. I am so proud of you and I am thankful to have you as my son. Happy 25th Birthday. I love you. MOM

At the end of my fall break Norman and I had an opportunity to go to the TN v Al game, and although the game did not end in our favor, the weekend was GREAT! We drove up on Thursday and spent all day Friday in Pigeon Forge looking at cabins. And then walked down to the Market Square and had a delcious meal. Saturday morning began with breakfast with sweet, Amy. What a treat to get to visit with her. Hopefully, Chris will be able to join us next time. Game day was beautiful football weather!!! We helped in Volunteer Village with a John Deere booth. Just before game time we ran into one of Norman's cousins and his family and all of us were able to have a sideline visit to watch the teams warm up for the game. The renovations to the stadium are really nice. Sunday morning we met Jake and Amber for breakfast and enjoyed catching up with all that is going on with them. Thanks, Jake for getting up so early on your day off.

Trip to Chicago

During my fall break Summer and I flew to Chicago to visit with Samuel and to drive his car back so we could sell it. We had a wonderful time with lots of great food. We walked to the Navy Pier, which is just a stone's throw away from his apartment, went to see him play Flag Football, ran along Lake Michigan,visited the Lego store, went to the top of the Sears' Tower (which is no longer the Sears' Tower), saw the BEAN, walked down Michigan Avenue. Samuel's apartment is really convenient to everything and he has it nicely decorated. It has a roof top area where you can see the city and Lake Michigan. Summer and I had our devotional up there early one morning. The weather was beautiful!!! Samuel was the perfect host taking us to several great places to eat-RL's, Foxx and Obels, The Yolk, Gage's and another place where we had a delicious steak. We also had a delcious meal on Sunday night by a friend of Samuel's and also got to meet some of his friends he has made in Chicago. I had to take a picture of Luke's Place and of course, Papa's mark is EVERYWHERE!! Thanks, Samuel for a wonderful visit!!!

Summer and I had a good drive back home with a stop over in Bradford to see Meme and Papa. Thanks, Summer for going with me.

Montana Fishing Trip for Greg and Norman

In September Norman finally went fly fishing with our friend Greg. Greg had been asking Norman to go for about 15 or 20 years and it just never seemed to be a time when he could go but now that he has gone, I know he definitely wants to go again sometime. They spent about 6 hrs a day for 7 relaxing days fly fishing in Montana. They also made a short visit to Yellowstone National Park. Thanks, Greg, for being so persistent, for doing all the planning, for the supply list and for putting up with his sometimes corny jokes. He really had a great time!!!

This summer I have the wonderful privilege of keeping my grands for a period of time and of course I came to my mom and dad's for re-enforcement. My mother can run circles around me when it comes to keeping up with the kids. We left on Tuesday to drive to Destin where I met my sister and 22 other relatives at Big Kahunas (a HUGH water park). We arrived @ 11 and stayed until 5 - to say my tail was dragging at the end of the day is an understatement. We took a few pictures but mostly our eyes were on the 13 children (which were 13 and under). And yes, by the grace of God we left with the same 13 with which we had arrived. Fun was had by ALL (the children, that is). Yesterday Ma, Aunt Sarah and I took my four down to Florida Park where Landon caught a fish on his homemade fishing pole. The lure was almost as big as the fish. We couldn't believe it and did not think you would either so we took a picture for proof. We then visited with the cousins again at my sister's house, where the kids enjoyed paddling in the canoe and kayak, playing in the wash tub, killing a snake, basketball, a video game, Lego's and running and screaming through the house. When we loaded up the kids to come home, I thought it was at least 8 o'clock, it was 6. When we got back over to Ma's we got ice cream from Aunt Sarah's, rode bikes and the golf cart to Florida Park, played in the water, got baths and then played a game of Rook with Papa, Ma, Parker and Bryce. Parker and Papa won. What a great day we had!! Everyone enjoyed a good nights sleep. This morning we made a trip to Turkey Creek where we were met by Kimberly, Estella and soon to be baby Luna. We swan, talked about Deep Creek, got chased by the squirrels and watched the turtles.

Ou next trip was to Deep Creek, our family camping trip we make every year in Bryson City,NC. The grands and I went up a little earlier to secure the campsites. We had such a good time even though we had rain the very first night-had to change tents in the middle of the night but I don't think the kids will forget that for a long time -that is everyone except Parker who slept through the entire move. He woke up the next morning and said, "How did we get in this tent?"

Being thankful should come naturally, but sometimes I get so busy in asking for this and that I forget to be thankful. So I am going to join this group and start my list...and yes, I know it is not Monday and yes, as a somewhat recovering OCD person it is very hard to begin on Tuesday since it is suppose to be the Multitude Monday 1000 gifts group but I am going out on a limb and starting today!!

A Day at the Zoo

Sunday was a beautiful spring day!!!Did I tell you that I love spring? I don't think I would love it as much if it were not for winter. After three months of rain, cold, drab colors, slowly the flowers begin to bloom and the trees begin to grow crisp, green leaves. So anyway, after church Norman and I headed to Zoo Atlanta. They had a new parakeet exhibit and we were able to go in and fed them. They were beautiful; yellows, blues and greens. Norman enjoyed rubbing the pig's belly in the petting zoo. We also got to watch a panda eating bamboo. They are usually asleep everytime we go. We enjoyed it so much we purchased a membership so now we can go anytime. We also received a 10% discount because I am a teacher. YEA!!!

Just What the Dr. Ordered...visiting Luke in Grenada

This trip was one of the highlights of my life. Norman and I left last Wednesday for a visit with Luke in Grenada. He was finishing up his mid-terms and had a few days off from school. We left the house around 6:15am headed for the ATL airport where we flew non-stop to St Lucia compliments of Norman's Delta Skymiles. We knew we were going to have to change airports in St Lucia but what we did not know was that the other airport was on the opposite end of the island.

We were directed to a waiting cab and began our journey. Our cab driver, Pios, was very knowledgeable about the island and answered all our questions. We traveled north with a zig and a zag east and west through a fishing village and a rain forest, all the while hearing about the island. We saw lots of banana trees.

An hour and a half later and $80 less in our pockets, we arrived at the hole in the wall they call the "local airport", home of the infamous Liat Caribbean Airline-which handles all the hops from island to island. This was a small open air facility with a tiny cafe(by this time we were starving having dined only on biscoff cookies and diet cokes). We made a quick money exchange and headed for the cafe where we were served a delicious hamburger and French fries. I sprinkled my fries with what I thought to be the salt but turned out to be vanilla for the coffee.

Around 5:30 they began calling for the flight to Trinidad/Tobago. I knew our flight was not until 6:30 and that we were going to St. Vincent. Norman was reading and I was people watching. They did a final call and Norman asked me if I was sure this was not our flight. I began to wonder and checked the departure sign again, still no mention of St Vincent. I finally asked the agent and sure enough it was our flight. We quickly went through the checkout and were personally escorted to the plane(may I add we were the last ones to board).

They dropped us off in St Vincent which was another tiny place-no cafe but it did have a liquor store. We finally arrived in Grenada around 10:00 pm. Luke picked us up at the airport. It was good to get a big hug from him.

One of his friends had gone home for the break so we were able to stay in her place which was located right next door to Luke's. Keri, a sweet young lady from Canada, had bought snacks, water and juice for us and had placed chocolate and flowers on our pillows. What a nice welcome we received!!!

The next morning we heard a whistle and it was Luke bringing Norman some coffee. We visited briefly with him before he left for his exam. Later we met him and his study buddies at Nick's Donut Shop - apparently that is an after exam ritual. The rest of the day we spent hanging out at the beach. That night we all gathered at his place and watched him prepare a delicious meal of spaghetti with girl scout cookies for dessert. Yes, siblings, he cooked-pictures to prove it!!! I guess all that sou chef training he has had with Ryan has paid off.

Friday was the campus and island tour day with Luke and Lorin, a precious girl from Trinidad. Luke was not cooperating with my photo ops so Lorin graciously stepped in. Being able to see all the places he has told us about was a real treat-school,church, grocery store and all the places where he and Mark run everyday-some very beautiful views. More beach time and a meal at the local Owl Restaurant with Keri,Luke and Lorin.

Saturday he and Mark(a 50+ Californian who decided to pursue a new career as an MD, he already has a PHD in engineering)went on an early morning scuba dive. Norman and I opted out of that trip but we were able to sit on the beach and watch them gear up, leave and return. That night I fixed French toast, Keri fixed sausage, bacon and a fruit bowl and Mark fixed pancakes. It was delicious!! It was so neat how everyone fixes whatever and gathers wherever to share all their meals together. Coffee and tea were always served after the meal and much conservation was enjoyed.

Sunday we all piled in the car and headed for church, which is held on campus in one of the lecture halls. It was a wonderful service with lots of good singing. We all met at the La Boulangrie(an Italian place) for lunch after which Norman, Luke, Keri and I decided to go snorkeling. Let's just say we gave everyone on the beach quite a laugh-with both of us (Norman and I) trying to put on our flippers while being crashed by the waves-(Help, I have fallen and can't get up) It was not a pretty site. Once we finally made it into the water Luke and I (Norman decided snorkeling was not his forte)were able to see some pretty black and white stripped fish, some yellow ones and some pretty blue ones. I can't believe I grew up in Florida and had never been snorkeling. Once I stopped drinking the water and realized I could breathe through my month it was really neat! Thanks, Luke for your patience.

Sunday night Hamid and Ciara, two other friends, prepared a fabulous, authentic Afghan meal of spinach/potatoes, eggplant, grilled chicken and shrimp, and a wonderful chocolate cake, and of course coffee and tea. Hamid kept us all laughing throughout the meal. Later Luke and Norman went to a flag football game where Luke's team ended up losing in the last 12 secs. He was not a happy camper.

Monday the game face mode kicked in for Luke and it was back to the grind of studying. Norman and I spent most of the day on the beach just relaxing. We made a trip to the grocery store but did not realize how steep the walk back up with 6 bags of groceries was-worked up a bit of a sweat!!!.

Tuesday everyone had classes so Norman and I made a trip to the school bookstore for some souvenir shopping. We were also able to visit the memorial for the 16 Marines who lost their lives to rescue the American medical students in the 1983 invasion of Grenada.

It truly was a blessing to meet all of the wonderful people Luke has as his friends and to meet some to the locals that also help care for Luke. How truly blessed he is to be in such a special place surrounded by such nice people. They are so encouraging to one another. Thanks be to God for allowing me to see how He has surrounded Luke with His love and care.

Luke and Lorin took us to the airport early Wednesday morning and although I hated to say goodbye, I was going home knowing he was in good hands. Our flight home was long but uneventful, thank goodness. Our cab driver met us in St. Lucia and took us to a wonderful local restaurant on our way back to the international airport. There we enjoyed fresh grapefruit juice, king fish, plantains, salad and a banana/ice cream dessert that was heavenly.

It was indeed one of the best trips ever.

Norman and I had the wonderful opportunity to be host for the 2010 Manager's Club in Pueto Vallarta, Mexico. We met many nice new people and visited with some familiar faces, as well. The trip was one of the best! We arrived on Thursday afternoon to a the beautiful Grand Velas Suites & Spa. Our room was huge and had a beautiful view overlooking the pool and the Pacific Ocean. We slept with our door open every night so we could be lulled to sleep by the crashing of the oceans waves. It was like a sedative. On Friday our activity was a Canopy Tour. We met in the open-air lobby around 9:30 and were greeted by two vivacious young tour guides - Nada and Poncho. They were so full of energy. After about an hour's ride through the country, we arrived to our destination "the middle of know where". There we were suited up with harnesses, bandanas, and helmets. We were given a quick lesson on zip-lining and then we were off for our hike up the mountain. We were surrounded by more energitic zippers who affectionately called us Maria Jose' and Papa Norman. One at a time we watched the people ahead of us fly through the air over the top of the trees and suddenly it was my turn. Marco hooked the bottom line and then the top. I placed my left hand around the ropes and my right on top of the bottom line and was reminded to gently press down when given the signal to break at the bottom of the ride. DO NOT GRAB THE ROPE!!! I sat down gently, let go of the line and off I went flying through the air (screaming, of course). I watched for the signal to break at the bottom and immediately grabbed the rope. Needless, to say I got quite a jerk but landed safely on the next platform with the help of Phillipe. My legs were like jelly but I was ready to go again. We did around 12-15 lines, repelled twice, crossed 2 very shaky wooden bridges, and climbed a 75' swinging ladder!!!! It was AWESOME and I highly reccommend it to everyone over 50.

The next day our activity was riding ATV's out in the country. A 5 minute lesson on how to drive an ATV was given, a helmet and another bandana and off we went. Norman and I were at the very back on the line. I had never driven an ATV so I was a little nervous to say the least! The guide kept motioning for me to go faster and faster, then finally moved me to the front of the line. After I realized I was not going to die, I really enjoyed the trip. Not sure I every got the shifting of the gears right but it was really a lot of fun. We traveled through real Mexican villages,passed cows in the middle of the road, along with true cowboys on horseback, and splashed through mud puddles.

Thimble, Thimble Whose Got the Thimble???

When I was a little girl we liked to play this game.

Well....

One of the things Norman and I enjoy doing together is going to Estate Sales. We love visiting some of the old homes of Atlanta and stepping back in time. I always want to know who lived there, what did they do, what happened to them, etc. Sometimes if you listen (you know I am good at that) you can find the answers to some of these questions. Its amazing what you can learn about a person just by rummaging through their stuff.

Saturday was the perfect day for estate saling. The air was crisp and the leaves were in all of their fall glory!!!! We plugged in our addresses and off we went. Just to clarify the difference in a yard sale and an estate sale...The words "estate sale" can mean different things depending on the quality of the person's "junk" or to coin an old phrase -"one man's junk is another man's treasure". But what we have found to be true is if you replace the word "yard" with the word "estate" the price immediately jumps up at least 50%. You have to be careful.(You could end up with an organ no one needs-inside family joke that is still sitting in our living room).

On this particular day we hit some of both. I found 4 Mardi Gras mask, 4 boas and 3 Disney videos for the kids. We saw an exercise machine like the one my Aunt Aubrey use to have. (Just had to have a picture of that!) And a Coleman stove the size of my first microwave. Can we say - Where is the dumpster????

We visited a very old house out by the Governor's Mansion with beautiful trees, terrace landscaping, an elevator, lots of old dishes and books. I found a prayer book entitled A Diary of Private Prayer copyright 1949. It has a morning and evening prayer and lots of handwritten notes. Inside was folded a piece of paper with this prayer - "For Those We Love" - "Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to thy never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that thou art doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen." I thought that was very well said. I also found a copy of C.S.Lewis' Mere Christianity .(I have always heard of this book but have never read it. I look forward to doing so). Tucked inside of this book was a bookmark that said, "My Grace is Sufficent for Thee". Another lady found a "Leaves of Gold" poetry book which had been a gift from Governor Carl E. Sanders (Governor of Georgia in 1963).

Our final stop of the day brought Norman's "find"... Let me preface this by saying, I have never been a collector of anything but dust, which by the way is easy to collect but not very profitable. However, someone was and now I am a collector of thimbles. I am now the proud owner of over 200 of them!!! We actually detached the display case from the wall with the thimbles still inside. They threw in many of the original boxes at no extra charge. You know Norman, he is quite the negotiator. When we got home we were like two kids on Christmas morning looking at all the different thimbles. Some of them are just sourvenir types from over 50 different US cities, more than 60 are from places all over the world and some are just very unique. It also included a complete set of 25 Country Store Collection Thimbles with papers for each.

I have taken pictures of a few of my favorites. So if you are looking for the perfect gift for Christmas for someone who collects thimbles, we are looking to turn a profit and can fix you up!!! Otherwise, these thimbles will one day be a "find" for someone at our estate sale. Enjoy.

Visiting Samuel & 1st time visit to Disney

After the visit to Treasure Island, I met Samuel in Tampa. We did some shopping @ the International Mall - where we looked at "Coach Purses" and $650 sun glasses. Needless to say I did not purchase anything but Samuel did buy a cute dress for Sydney with a matching hat and shoes. We had a nice dinner and then went to his apartment where we watched a movie on his laptop. It was fun!!! The next morning I was able to meet his staff. It was so weird to see my baby as the boss. I was one proud momma. Around 10 I picked Summer up from the airport, we drove back over to pick up Samuel and then we all went to lunch.

Summer and I drove on over to Orlando, while Norman waited and rode with Samuel after he got off work. Norman had made us reservations (using pts)at a brand new Hilton on the Disney property. We had connecting rooms. It was nice!! Sara, Ryan and the kids arrived around 7 and we all met for dinner in Downtown Disney.

Saturday was a little cool but sunny. We rode the ferry over and spent a glorious day at Disney's Magic Kingdom. It truly was magically. Seeing the castle, riding the rides, eating funnel cakes, watching parades and performances of the all the favorite characters brought tears to my eyes throughout the day. Everyone seemed to really have an enjoyable time. Watching my children's delight was as much fun as watching the grands. I definitely recommend waiting until your children are 23, 28 and 30 to go to Disney-they don't fight, whine or complain,they can feed themselves, go to the bathroom by themselves and they have their own money. NICE :)

Samuel was a wonderful host! He supplied the tickets for the Jackson crew, bought souvenirs, paid for lunch and bought suckers the size of their faces. It was a wonderful day!!! For pictures see http://www.joshsummerandmaddux.blogspot.com/ I forgot my camera.

Fall Break

I recently had a nice 10 day fall break (Can I say, "I love my job!") Norman and I spent the first 5 days in Valdosta visiting Sara, Ryan and the GRANDS!!! I am not sure we could have crammed anymore into those 120 hours. A soccer game, a parade, bike rides, lunch with Parker @ 10:30 (I think that is considered brunch), lunch with Landon @ 11:00, lunch with Bryce @ 11:30, the hatching of several monarch butterflies and then their glorious releases, meeting teachers, doing a bulletin board, playing at the park, reading, shopping for a bed with Sydney(and lunch @ Chick-fil-A) and last but not least a little "OCD therapy". It was wonderful!!!!

Then it was off to Sarasorta where Norman attended a meeting. Before his meeting we were able to do a little sightseeing. We enjoyed a visit to the grounds of the Ringling Bros.Museum and some window shopping at Longshore Beach which included a Ben & Jerry's banana split. YUM! That evening we enjoyed a beautiful sunset and meal at Marina Jack's. The next day I enjoyed sleeping late, walking the Longshore Bridge, talking on the phone and a trip to Tampa via Treasure Island near St. Pete. I plugged in my destination to the GPS -not really expecting the place to be there. But sure enough the man said, "Continue 3.2 miles." I continued to drive, then heard, "Arriving at destination on right." I couldn't believe it but there she was, the Thunderbird Hotel and right next door, the Sea Castle. And yes, (those of you who know me), I cried. I got out, walked through the lobby(it was very small)and out to the pool area. It looked frozen in time with the rooms opening right up to the pool, the seawall between the hotel and the beach leading to the water.

***SIDE NOTE - As I crossed the drawbridge onto Treasure Island a flood of memories flashed through my mind...
When I was a little girl one of my favorite aunts (I am so blessed to have 3 favorites: Aunt Louanne, Aunt Sarah and Aunt Aubrey)lived in St. Petersburg. My family and I would travel to see her every summer. She would put us up in a very nice hotel on the beach where we would swim, laugh, play shuffle board,laugh, play goofy golf, laugh, eat ice cream and laugh everyday. Occassionally, we(my cousin, Cheri and I) would find some cute boys by the pool with which to exchange addresses. Oh the lazy, crazy days of summer. Thanks, Aunt Sarah for all the fond memories of the vacations at the Sea Castle and the Thunderbird.

Oh Where is My Hair Brush???

Back in the 60's when I was a little girl and school pictures were made there was always a lady checking everyone's hair to make sure it was neatly combed and ready to be photographed. After fixing your hair just right, she gave you the comb. Not sure where the comb lady was on this day???? But I can assure you(since I am in charge of the yearbook) this photo will be under the "photo not available" section. Where were my friends...Looks like someone would have started singing the Veggie Tale's song "Oh Where is Your Hair Brush????" (You are now singing that song and some of you may be remembering the talent show at GCS where Mike Johnson played Larry the Cucumber).

Cleaning out the Files (WARNING: Do not read while driving or operating machinery)

Today I started cleaning out files and rearranging the upstairs. After several trips up and down the stairs carry this and that I vaguely remembered doing this same thing in reverse not too long ago when Luke was going to move back home and wanted the upstairs to be more like an apartment. Shortly after we had moved everything downstairs that had been upstairs, he decided to move in with Summer and Josh instead. And here I am again moving "STUFF". I'm sure you have all read the article about how much time the average person spends of his life sleeping, eating, going to the bathroom, etc. I wonder how much of my life I have spent moving "STUFF"!!

Side note: The other day a friend of mine and I who work the car rider line every afternoon figured out that the average mom or dad spends 3 weeks of their life waiting in the car rider line.

The definition of "STUFF" is: things never used but in perfectly good condition; something one might need but can never find when needed. You know like greeting cards and evelopes that do not fit, old cell phones with no chargers, notebooks, AC adapters that fit things you no longer have, pens, pens and more pens, etc.

The reason I am moving "STUFF" this time is because on the 15th of September the John Deere Atlanta Branch will be closing after 100 years in the Atlanta area and Norman will be moving his office home once again.(I think they call that restructuring-which by definition means-fewer people to do the same amount of work).

When he started with John Deere some 30+ years ago he had his office in our bedroom (approx.7 years)-complete with 1x12's and cinder blocks for bookshelves. It was a Southern Living beauty!! When we moved to Perry he graduated to a 5x5 walk-in closet off our bathroom-complete with a large desktop computer, a green screen monitor, a track feed printer that made banners and an oscillating fan. Believe it or not I found some track feed paper in the "STUFF"-like I said, "things you never use". Then when we built the house in Valdosta he finally had a real office with oak bookcases, drawers, a window and a door. I surprised him and had the cabinet-maker make him a nice oak desk to match. He was thrilled and so was I!! Then came the move to ATL where he received a nice cubicle with a view of the pond. Now he will have part of the upstairs which also has a view of two twin beds, two radio/CD stereos, several chest of drawers, one cedar chest, and the eliptical. (He will have his own personal bathroom-I think I will put a note in there that says "Please dispose of all sanitary napkins or tampons in the trashcan provided. Flushing may cause clogs in the toilet." - just so it will feel like a real office bathroom)

The problem I am having is getting the desk upstairs. First of all I emptied all of our files, and misc. junk out of the drawers, emptied my old yellow file cabinet(from my teaching days at GCS-see photo provided) which incidentally was filled with old files and some 8000 canceled checks dated back to 1993(thus the picture of the shredder), cleaned out a space in our closet for the file cabinet, dragged the file cabinet up from the basement and back to the closet, moved the beds,the chest of drawers and the eliptical to make room for the "nice oak desk". However, I could not move the desk. It is 3/4 inch solid oak. (I can still see my daddy walking around measuring the thickness of our cabinets with his tape measurer). He was amazed!!!Needless to say it is too heavy for even 2 people to carry up the stairs.I have moved all the drawers and the top.(see photo for details) Where are the handymen when you need them???

Back to the reason for the blog...sorry, kind of got off track. That seems to be happening alot lately.

Where was I??? Oh yes, cleaning out the files. It was like reading my diary, I mean journal or is it blog??? Anyway, it was a walk down memory lane. There was a file of "At-A-Boy" letters that Norman had received over the years. For those of you who do not know what that is...it is a letter you receive for doing a good job. He had lots of them. There was a joke file, a speech file and even one with road maps-who uses those anymore(some people I know never did).

There was a file for house plans and the binder I kept when we built our house in Valdosta-with dividers for each area-electrical, building material, paint, flooring, appliances, etc along with every receipt for every purchase made.(can we say excessive OCD) There was a file for games. Games for showers, teens, marriage, Christmas, critical thinking, etc. I played one with Josh on the phone and he was really good. I should have known since he is a critical thinker.(I learned that from his blog-I also learned that I, on the other hand, am NOT). There were files about motherhood, about breastfeeding, about raising teenagers, about marriage, about life - life that had passed so quickly...Where were my babies, my teenagers? Had I followed the advice in those articles I had saved?

And then there were the canceled checks(those are the things we used before ATM cards and online banking, those things that can bounce and months that happen to be too long). I should have had the bank pre-print most of them to Winn-Dixie, Wal Mart, D & A Photo and Georgia Christian.(Yes, Ryan there was an occassional one to Publix) With every check I shredded there was a memory-piano lessons, orthodontist,gymastics, Schwan's Food, Bugle boy(use to be the place to buy jeans). There was a check for $1000 to Debbie Griffin for one horse and saddle-money the kids had made selling pecans the first year on the property. There were checks made payable to Harold Norman,Sr.who had loaned us money to buy the blue club wagon van. And yes it did have a porta-potty(my daddy and I found it at a yard sale). Back then there was no stopping for bathroom breaks. (The whoopti came later and we paid cash for it or did they pay us to take it-can't remember??? I do remember it was a hot item when we got ready to sell it, even though it kept running for several minutes after you shut it off and one of the doors had been knocked off because someone forgot to shut it before backing up. Those 300+ pecan trees are hard to see sometimes.(I think this is the same person who built the barn but not to be confused with the person who mowed the yard ALL the time and never knew there was a clutch. I guess he thought it was just a footrest or something). Yes, there was even a check to Pam Dasher for the Jimmy - every car she ever owned was yellow, even her cadillac I backed into at church. Backing was not one of our families strong points.

There were checks for car repairs, haircuts, school supplies and Mazzio's pizza. Checks for youth rallys, trophies, uniforms, drum sets, and sports registrations. There were checks with my daddy's handwriting, where he had gone to get something we needed from West Bldg Supply when he was helping us build the house. Checks for chorus dresses, chorus ties, chorus trips. Checks for graduations, college applications and weddings...

And in about the same amount of time it took me to shred those checks, that time had passed, leaving behind the fondest of memories.

And by the way it takes about 3 hours(not counting clog time and automatic shut down to let the machine cool)to shred 8000+ checks. And even though the machine says "up to 6 sheets or 1 credit card" it really doesn't mean that. Six sheets just means you will have to unclog after every shred. However, it will take a paring knife-no problem, comes out in two pieces, the blade and the handle.

Six Feet Under with the Boys

On Saturday Norman, Luke, Samuel and I met to hear Bill Bass, famous forensic scientist and UT Alumni speak. We arrived to find out that it was a sell out and we had not made reservations. Needless to say we were all disappointed but decided to make the best of it and have some lunch at Six Feet Under, a neat restaurant in ATL (somewhere) As usually Samuel ordered our appetizers - fried green tomatoes, oysters on the half shell and alligator bites. We then all were trying to decide what each of us wanted for our entree'. Samuel toyed with the idea of crab legs but decided (having had those before) that that was just TOO much work for a Saturday afternoon. He ordered shrimp instead. But Luke had never had crab legs and decided he would give them a try. An hour later he was still cracking crab legs, picking out the meat and gripping the whole time about how they needed to give him a pair of scissors and he could just snip, snip and pull that meat right out. You can see for yourself that fun was had by all. (After 3 trys we family got a good picture with both Norman and Samuel with their eyes opened)

Landon's visit with Gran and Papa

After the reunion we had the priviledge of having Landon with us for a few days. I don't remember ever having just him by himself. We had a good time. We built an airplane with legos, used Luke's skateboard to ride down the hill, made cookies and a special cake, picniced with Papa, fished with Papa(he caught all the fish but Landon got to pull them in)and of course had bubble baths and a movie. Thanks, Landon for staying with us and hope you will be able to come again soon.

Shelling in Bradford and Norman's 40th Class Reunion

This summer Norman, Luke and I made a trip to Bradford for Norman's 40th class reunion. (Yes, he is much older than me!!!!!) This is another of my favorite places to visit. While we were there Meme and Papa's neighbor told us we could go pick some shelly beans so we did. It brought back so many memories of when Norman and I were first married and when our kids were young. Meme and Papa lived on a hill with about 10 acres of land next to a cemetary. There were always at least two gardens-one between Meme and Papa's and Uncle Billy Bob's and another in the bottom close to the cemetary. Just outside the house was a big shade tree with a swing and some yard chairs, as they were called. This is where everyone would congregate after picking the stuff from the garden to shell the peas and beans, shuck the corn, and make homemade ice cream. There was always a breeze and plenty of waves from the people as they passed by. Meme would take those fresh vegetables and cook them just right. She would add some corn bread, fresh tomatoes and sweet tea and boy hidy - that was some good eating!!!!! - Paula Deen, Emeril or the Iron Chef would not even compare!!! Meme was the ORIGINAL Iron Chef! Give her an IRON SKILLET and she could make everything taste good!!!The old home place has since been replaced by a four-lane highway but those great memories will last a life time. Thanks Meme and Papa for such wonderful memories!!

The reunion was alot of fun, too. It was held in the Bradford Elementary Gym. As soon as we walked in the door a woman jumped up, hugged Norman and said, "Junior Norman, you look just like Polly Norman(that's Norman's momma) with a mustache." It was neat to hear the tales they all told on each other. About picking cotton, selling magazines and going on their Senior Trip to New York and Niagra Falls-which by the way was quite a trip for these kids that had never been out of Gibson County. I cannot imagine what it was like to go to the same school from kindergarten through 12th grade. This was a place where neighbors were really neighbors and not just aquaintances. We laugh about this small town in West Tennessee but what a neat place it must have been to grow up. A rich hertiage, indeed!!!

Deep Creek 2009/NC Berry Reception

Deep Creek is my absolute favorite time of year. I knew a girl whose family went to the same place every summer for vacation. I thought how dumb is that to go to the same place every year but ... now I know. It is located in the Smoky Mountain National Park in Bryson City, NC. Some of the best sleeping ever (of course my mattress is coveted by all)for those that don't have the NEW and improved air bed(NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH A REGULAR AIR MATTRESS) There is just nothing like waking to the sounds of birds singing and squirrels chatting back and forth to one another(or listening to the conversation of a fellow camper) The campfires, tube rides, card games,good food and fellowship can not be matched. I do hope everyone will be able to come next year. A certain someone is turning 60-what better place to celebrate than Deep Creek!!

Happy 4th of July in ATL

On Thursday Norman and I decided we would see if we could get a room in ATL so we could watch Luke and Summer run in the Peachtree Road Race on Saturday. I really thought everything would be booked but you know Norman and his negotiating skills, he was able to get us a corner room over looking Peachtree and 10th right where the runners would make the turn to the finish line. All for a really good price!!

Friday morning we met Luke @ Atlantic Station for a combo tour of the BODIES Exhibit/Dialog in the Dark. It was absolutely amazing! I had my on personal tour guide, Luke, for the Bodies Exhibit and I really learned alot about God's wonderful creation of the body and how it is all intricately connected to work together. AWESOME!!! The Dialog in the Dark was a 30 min. simulation of what it would be like to be blind. We were given a white cane and entered an area where the lights were slowly dimmed until it was completely black. You literally could not see your hand in from of your face. Our guide who was blind directed us with only the sound of his voice. We traveled through a park, took a ride on a bus, walked down a busy street, visited a soda fountain, crossed a bridge and tried to do some grocery shopping. A whole new appreciation for my sight!

By the time we finished our tour it was lunch time. It was a beautiful, breezy day so we decided to eat outside @ Doc Green's, a sandwich/salad place. It was good. We then made a brief visit to IKEA. I had never been and had heard alot about it. (Note to self-never go shopping with Luke and Norman) I think we were in there a total of 10 mins including checkout time. It was then time to check into our hotel. The view was perfect.

That night Samuel met us and we all walked down to a local restaurant for dinner where once again we ate outside with a nice cool breeze. The meal was delicious and the conversation was very enjoyable. Summer joined us later and we all went back to the hotel to talk some more. Samuel stayed until around 11. Luke and Summer decided to spend the night so they would be downtown early for the race. We called for a roll away. Summer got the mattress and Luke got the bed frame. It was so much fun to just sit around and talk/listen to them. What a blessing!!!!

Saturday morning we were all up early. Summer and Luke left for the Marta to the starting line and Norman and I found a nice shady spot for our lawn chairs. He and I then walked to the Broadway Diner for breakfast. By the time we returned the race was well underway. So many people, all ages, shapes, sizes, and styles. We were able to see Summer, Suzie, Luke, Jenny and her mom-all sporting Waffle House T-Shirts that read "I run so I can eat at Waffle House". We walked down to Peidmont Park for a few photos.

Next it was off to Summer and Josh's for a 4th of July Pool Party complete with delicous BBQ, potato salad, baked beans, Frito Corn Salad, watermelon, homemade ice cream and lots of good fellowship with Josh, Summer, Samuel, Luke, the Gernatts and many of their neighbors and friends.

It was a wonderful 4th of July celebration. We are so blessed to live in this beautiful free country!!!

Happy 30th Birthday, Josh!!!!!
Well someone told me the other day that my other son(in-law) may think I was a little partial to Ryan because I had kept his picture on my blog for so long but as I said in that blog I am so blessed to have TWO wonderful son(in-laws) but today I will blog about Josh. Josh joined our family OFFICIALLY about 5 and a half years ago and has been such an added blessing to us all. He, like Ryan, is such a good brother-in-law to Summer's siblings who can all be somewhat opinionated at times.(just stating the facts) He is always a willing helper when things need to be done in our huge extended family. He is easy going and an excellent babysitter!!!!! His nieces and nephews love their Uncle Josh-in fact, much to Summer's dismay, I believe they said "Josh" before they said "Summer"(Actually, I think they said Maddux before either of them)He is an encourager, too but most of all he loves our daughter. A Very Enjoyable Day-despite the outcome of the game!!

On Saturday Norman and I went with another couple to the Auburn/TN game. The weather was perfect for football. The couple we went with has a daughter who is a freshman at Auburn so we went by to see her dorm room and had a nice lunch with her at the famous Moma Goldberg's Deli. It was good but very crowded. Once we got our food we ate across the street underneath a nice shade tree. We then walked down to the corner of Roosevelt and something where the Tiger Walk takes place. The band came from all 4 streets and met at the corner where the drum major led them in serval numbers including the Auburn fight song. I love a marching band. After that we met up with the couple who got us our tickets. A very nice couple who both graduated from Auburn. We had great seats and because they were scholarship donors we were able to get our refreshments for free. We got to see the eagle fly in and around the stadium and enjoyed singing God Bless America along with the other 87,000 people there. Where else in the USA can you do that? Then we all sang the National Anthem. We do live in a great country!!!! It was a very enjoybale day.

G3 Pizza

On Friday I made my favorite pizza-Gorgonzola Guacamole Greek Pizza. I use a toasted whole wheat tortilla shell for the crust. Next I mash up 1 small ripe avacodo with a little salt and pepper and spread it on the crust. Then I chop up a tomato and sprinkle it on. Next I add some thinly sliced pieces of red onion, a tablespoon of gorgonzola cheese and some craisins. You can add 2 pieces of crumbled crisp ready to serve bacon. Then I bake it for about 5 mins. just to get it nice and warm. It makes a very colorful meal. For WW people its only 5 points!

Our Weekend

We had a special treat this weekend, a visit from Sara. She got in town around 6:00 on Friday evening. We met for a catfish/chicken liver dinner at Henderson's. When we got back to the house she and I got busy downstairs doing some measuring and planning for their up coming move into their house in Valdosta. She was up and off by 8 for breakfast with Samuel and then on to the airport to pick up Igor, an interpreter from Ukraine. We missed seeing Ryan and the children but hope it won't be long before we can all get together. Oh and on Friday night we get a call from Chesed. She is on her way to Summer's and needs a few directions. I give her what she needs and hang up. In a little bit she calls back and seems that Patrick has left his directions at home and he, too, needs some directions. CAN WE SAY THIS IS A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN ALREADY OR WHAT?????? On Saturday we spent most of the day resting and doing the WEEKLY laundry. I did get up and fix us two Lean Cuisines for supper. Yum Yum. Sunday we attended church @ North Atlanta which is always a treat. The lady in front on us was from Bradford, Tn. Can you believe that??? After church we met Summer, Josh, Luke, Chesed and Patrick for lunch. We were excited to get to met and greet this Patrick fellow(some people were not sure what his name was..Summer called him Eric and Norman called him Matthew)that we have been hearing sooooooo much about. He was very good natured about all that, thank goodness. Yes, we do agree they are definitely SMITTEN!!! Is that polictically correct? He has our vote!! Now is that for a husband or President of the USA?????(Chesed as first lady?) Anyway, it sounds like May will be the month of marriages!!! We are excited for both of them. After a delicious meal (Max and Erma's again-those chocolate chip cookies are soooo worth the drive) and a little fellowship, Norman and I headed off to an Estate Sale-half price today. We did find some deals which will be delivered tomorrow. We went by the hospital to visit our new friend Kate who is in therapy there recovering from an Acquired Brain Injury. We could not believe the how much more alert she was this time. It had been 3 weeks since we had seen her. She reached her hand out to Norman and made eye contact with me. She is not speaking yet but we are praising God for this progress. Her stay @ Shepherds as been extended which is a good sign. Next we made a stop to look at a used washer and dryer we had seen advertised in the paper. The people were very nice and we enjoyed visiting with them. They lived in a high-rise condo on Peachtree. The view was gorgeous and the washer and dryer had only been used about 8 times. It will be perfect for Sara and Ryan. Needless to say, by the time we got home we were pretty pooped. It is late and I must go to bed for Monday will be here shortly. Hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Life's Lessons and the Eliptical

You know things are rather quiet around my house and there is plenty of time for pondering. Some of this is done on my eliptical. I would like to share some of my pondering thoughts...
*First of all my eliptical machine is located upstairs and unless I get up, go upstairs and actually get on my eliptical it will not do me any good whatsoever. My Bible is located on my night stand and unless I get up, open and read it, it will not do me any good either.

*Here is a picture of one of my routines. It has some easy parts and some that are not so easy. The more difficult parts make me stronger physically. The more diffcult times in life make me stronger spiritually.
*The routine I am working on now is 30 minutes. Sometimes I get on and I start pedaling fast, thinking the faster I pedal the faster I will get finished but it is 30 minutes no matter how fast I pedal. In fact, when I get to the hard parts if I am still pedaling fast a flashing light will come on and say, SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! How very true with life...when things get difficult in life we need to SLOW DOWN, be still and seek God's wisdom.
*In order to get through the more difficult parts of my exercise routine I have to take one part at a time. I can't focus on what is still left to do or I become overwhelmed. Sound familiar... One day at a time or maybe even one hour at a time on somedays.
*Most of the time I hold onto the movable handles to get the full benefit but sometimes I need to lean on the stationary handles just to get through the more difficult part. Ever need to lean on someone during the tough times?? I sure do and I am thankful for all of you who so graciously let me lean, who listen to me, who encourage me, who hold me up when I cannot stand alone.
*Everyone's life has its ups and downs. You may look at someone and think, "Boy, they sure have it all together," only to find out later they have struggles, too.

These are just a few things I have learned from my eliptical.
And here are a few verses that I have found that have blessed me...

Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge. Psalms 62:8

Supper with Samuel

Thursday night I was in town so I text Samuel to see if he would like to meet me for supper on his way home from work. He said yes. Summer had suggested a place called Max and Erma's. I got there first and got a table (although it was not all that crowded). Samuel arrived in his new suit, dress shirt and tie!!!! He looked so handsome and professional but of course, I forgot to get a picture!!!! Hopefully, we will we able to meet again soon and I will be sure to get a snapshot. It is always so good to spend time with him. Oh and guess what??? Samuel picked up the tab. Thanks, Samuel it was delicious and I look forward to meeting you again soon.

A Visit From Luke

On Thursday Luke came over after work. He was coming to take Norman for a colonoscopy on Friday but Norman's scope was canceled(after he had fasted all day). He and Norman enjoyed pork ribs, broccoli, sweet potato, fried okra, sliced tomatoes, creamed corn, deviled eggs, watermelon, cornbread, sweet tea, blackberry cobbler and ice cream. I think it was the first time the oven/stove had been used since my personal chef moved out 3 weeks ago. It still works and I realized I had not forgotten how to cook. We enjoyed visiting and by 9:30 both guys were sacked out. Today Norman and Luke enjoyed the day in and out of the canoe on a local creek. When I got home they were just getting out of the water. Luke stayed for my guacamole pizza and a little dreaded Fasfa paperwork for school. Before he left I decided I needed to get a picture for my blog. His quote was, "I just wish one time I could come without having to pose for a picture." As you can see I ignored that comment and was able to eventually get a smile out of him. Love you, Luke and thanks for coming. It was the highlight of our week!

New Tennis Shoes

As many of you know I have been trying to exercise. All summer I have been faithful at using my eliptical, most weeks daily. I had always heard that after a while it gets easier and you really want to do this. However, this was not the case for me. It was really hard for me to get through a 30 minute routine. So my personnel trainer, Summer, suggested that I alternate eliptical/walking. I think she called it crossed training. Monday I did the eliptical and Tuesday I WALKED (not ran) around my neighborhood. Wednesday my legs and buttocks were so sore I could hardly walk. I went ahead and did the eliptical which did not bother me as much. I called my trainer to complain about the soreness in my legs and butt. She suggested new tennis shoes. Thus, THE NEW TENNIS SHOES. I tried them out today hoping that this will do the trick and remove some of this soreness. Life without house guest is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO exciting. I think I will go dust the furniture now. Ha Ha.

Weekend in Valdosta

On Saturday I was able to ride down with Summer to Valdosta. It was sooooo good to see the little grans, Sara, Ryan and the Jacksons. We had fun in the pool with the children, ate a delicious meal and walked around Dasher for a photo scavenger hunt. Part of the scavenger hunt included a trip to the cemetery where the boys had to find a tombstone with a name that began with the first letter of their names. They enjoyed looking around and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset. Walking through Dasher you always get to see people out and about, this evening was no different. It was great to visit with old friends as we made our walk around the block. Sunday we had a great day as well worshipping at Central and visiting with more friends. Several of us met at Rodeo's Mexican Restaurant for lunch(don't recommend this place but the fellowship was such a pleasure, seeing our kids all grown up) Sara, Summer and I then attended a baby shower for Kristin. She is so precious!!! It was like a family reunion with lots of laughter and catching up on all the latest news from "the Dasher net". We headed back home around 4:30. We stopped and ate @ Zaxbys and enjoyed a little cheesecake, too. It was delicious!!!(sorry Josh and Luke but think of all the calories we saved you from eating) It was so good to see everyone. We miss Sara, Ryan and the children so much but know they are having soooo much fun there getting reconnected with so many friends. We are truly thankful for the blessings of all these wonderful people. Today I was in training all day and this afternoon I came in an took a long nap.

This summer my sister and I hiked up the Noland Divide Trail. This trail was not your typical some up and down areas, it was straight up for about 6 miles. It was not an easy hike for two 50+++ ers but because we had each other encouraging one another along the way, we made it. We were so proud. The view was magnificent. I am thankful I have a sister that encourages me not just on hikes but throughout life. Happy Birthday, Brenda! I love you.

Empty Nest Again

A little over 2 and a half years ago my empty nest was filled with three little ones, a momma and a daddy. I knew then that their stay would be temporary but I didn't realize just how quickly the time would pass. It was a time of learning and growing. We learned how to talk, climb stairs, ride bikes, swim, read, write, add and subtract. We learned how to play basketball, baseball and soccer. We learned to feed ourselves and use the potty. We lost teeth, finished kindergarten and first grade. We had a baby sister. We grew and grew and grew!!! We had bubble baths, movies and popcorn. We had birthday parties, hid Easter eggs and went trick or treating. We went to the zoo, Stone Mountain, the Children's Museum and Centennial Park. We visited Aunt Summer, Uncle Josh, Uncle Luke and Uncle Samuel. We played in the snow and watched it hail. We built forts and played with Legos. How very blessed I have been to be able to share this special time with my grandchildren. God Bless You All in our new adventure. I love you! GRAN

Today Sara, the kids and I went over to Aunt Summer's to do some back to school shopping and some swimming in Aunt Summer's pool. We found bookbags, lunch boxes, erasers, construction and wide ruled paper. After a long swim in the pool, Josh was nice enough to watch the children so the girls and I could go out to eat one last time before Sara leaves on Thursday (but remember I can't talk about that yet). For the last 6 months we have been meeting for supper every other Thursday night. It has been so much fun to have just some special "girl time". We have tried several different restuarants. Unlike Summer and I, Sara is a food critic. She usually has something to say about how something is fixed or how it taste. Tonight we went to the Fickle Pickle. Summer and I had been there before and thought we would let Sara try it. We were not expecting any thing but the usual comments about the food not being too great or the like. However, we were in for a BIG SURPRISE!! SARA LOVED THE SANDWICH!!! We were so shocked we decided to get it on video because we knew no one would believe it. Enjoy!!! I will miss this special time together.

Well today my baby boy started his first "real" job!!! I guess all that hard work he did as a child finally paid off (picking okra, weeding the flower beds, mowing the property, etc) Unlike those jobs, this one actually pays. I can't wait for him to get his first check so I can borrow some money!! Ha Ha. I am very proud of him. The interview process was very tedious but he set up 5 appointments in his trial run!!! Congratulations, Samuel (you know you read my blog) I know you will do GREAT!!!

Family Gathering

It is always so good to get everyone together for a meal. Yesterday we all gathered for a going away party for Sara and Ryan. I cannot blog about that yet so I will just say we had a good visit and enjoyed another delicious meal prepared by one of the guest of honors (not Sara). I am pretty sure everyone over enjoyed the food. He fixed his famous hot wings on the grill with roasted potatoes/carrots/onions. I prepared some fresh watermelon/blueberries/cantelope/strawberries (its hard to mess up the chopping of fruit) and the yellow tomato/cucumber salad w/avacodo. I must say Ryan has added many new foods to the Norman Hamburger Helper family. Ten years ago I didn't even know what an avacodo was must less how to peel one and finally after 2 and a half years of training from the master chef I can now properly peel, depit and scoop the meat of the avacodo. For dessert (in honor of non-chocolate lover, Sara) we had Grape Fanta Sherbet with fried plantains(another food I had never heard of). Like I said we all enjoyed ourselves way too much. But most of all we enjoyed the fellowship with one another. I love having all my little children together. I took some pics but then my battery went down so for more pics, see Summer's blog.

Momma's home and WE SURVIVED!!!!!!

If your want to know if you are as young as you use to be...try keeping up with 4 grandchildren while there mother is away!!! I am definitely NOT!!!!! I am not sure who was more happy to see Sara!!! But Momma is home and we are ALL very happy. She arrived on time today at 1:40 but I forgot about the customs wait (I also forgot my camera but I did remember to bring the children) and so Ryan, Bryce, Landon, Parker, Sydney and I had to wait for a little over an hour for her to finally appear. Needless to say everyone got a little cranky but when they saw their Momma everything was OK!!! Ryan fixed a delicious Mexican meal and a delicious cake with homemade strawberry jam used as the filling. It was tooooo good! We enjoyed watching the video, seeing the pictures and hearing all the funny stories of her trip. It was neat to see some of the people I had met when she and I went a few years back. Many, many thanks to everyone who helped out with the children while she was away. The Jacksons are wonderful grandparents and the boys enjoyed their visit with them so much. Thanks again to them for bringing the boys to Deep Creek for all of us to enjoy. Thanks to Summer, Josh, Luke and Norman for babysitting Sydney. And a big thanks to Ryan for all you do. You are a great daddy and I am so thankful for you. Sara had a wonderful time and I am glad she had the opportunity to return to this very unique place called Ukraine. Thanks, Sara for all the pictures and updates to let us be a part of this wonderful experience. And although I am very, very tired, I can truly say I enjoyed my special time with my grandchildren. On Sunday we attended church in Blairsville with our friends and then I drove to Chattanooga for a shower for the daughter of my friend Kathy. Amy, her daughter has always held a special place in my heart and I am so excited for her and her future husband, Chris. They will be married in just a couple of weeks. Amy and her family are Georgia Bulldogs fans from way back however, Chris is a UT grad and a big Orange fan(which immediately gave him the ok to marry Amy) At their engagement party and our first introduction to Chris, Norman and I both wore orange. Well this shower was a lingerie shower so I just happened upon an orange bra and some orange panties. Her mother-in-law had fixed her a UT football T-shirt with matching hairbow. Not to be out done her mother in turn cut off a GA T-shirt and sewn black tassles on the front. We had so much fun and the food was delicious.

A Weekend Away

This past weekend Norman and I made a trip to visit our good friends Kay and Harold on beautiful Lake Notley. We had been trying to get up there for the past two summers but had not been able to find a weekend to go. So this weekend it worked out that Ryan was off and Summer/Josh/Luke had agreed to watch Sydney. We left around 10 on Friday, deposited Sydney with Uncle Luke and off we went. The weather was beautiful and the time there was very relaxing. They have a peaceful cabin right on the lake. We took some boat rides around the lake, floated on rafts, ate several really good meals, played scrabble and just sat around visiting. It was nice to get away even though the time was short. Thanks again to Summer/Josh/Luke for watching Sydney.

Noah's Wedding

On our way home from camping Ryan and I attended the wedding of our good friend, Noah Thornhill. Noah's mom Kathy, was one of the first people I met when we moved to Valdosta. We immediately became kindred spirits because of the ages of our children. Noah, Ryan and Sara graduated together so Noah spent alot of time in our home. Rebecca and Luke were a year apart, Lydia and Samuel graduated together and Emily was a year younger. Tim and Lea were Charlie's vets and Luke worked for Tim one summer. So there is much connection with our families. They are all near and dear to our hearts and I am so glad we were able to attend the wedding. It was in a beautiful little chapel on the tip top of a cliff in Greenville, South Carolina. The reception was at the Cliffs of Glassy Country Club. Ryan and I arrived around 11:30 on Sat. so our room was not available, We decided to go get some lunch in down town Greenville. We found a neat sandwich shop call Saffron's Sidewalk Cafe. We split an albi grilled tuna wrap and shrimp/grits soup. It was so good. By the time we ate lunch and shopped some our room was ready. I took a long nap while Ryan did some channel surfing. Around 3:30 we were picked up at our hotel by a huge charter bus which delivered us to the chapel. The ceremony was very sweet with Emily reading a passage from the Velveteen Rabbit. There was a harpist that played the War Eagle fight song for their departure from the chapel. The bus then delivered us to the country club for a very delicious meal. We listened to a live band and enjoyed watching everyone dancing. On the patio a man was wrapping cigars. It was a very nice wedding and it was great to share this special time with this very special family. We arrived back at our hotel around 12:30. (This is an extra long blog so feel free to skip it and just enjoy the pictures. Yes, I know there are lots of pictures of a cute little girl but..)

Well my most favorite time of year has come and gone. The tents have been stuffed back in there small bags, the coolers have been emptied and washed, ropes and tarps have been returned to their crates, the dirt under my fingernails has been removed and the washer and dryer have been going since I walked in the door this morning and although my hair has been washed 5 times since returning to civilization it still smells of campfire smoke but it was all so worth it. Sydney and I left Thursday morning around 9:00. She was so excited to be riding in Papa's truck, sitting up high and being able to see out the windows. We turned on the GPS and off we went. We sang, played "This Lil'Piggy"and ate goldfish. She was great until out GPS led us astray to Highway 28. Things went uphill and round the curves from there but after 20 miles in 45 minutes we were dumped back on to highway 74 just down from exit 67. We went immediately to see what sites were available, registered and then had a nice picnic lunch on one of our sites. After lunch she and I began to unpack our stuff and set up the tent. Some nice folks helped with the raising of the tent. I thought she might be getting ready for a nap so I set up her pack and play under a shaded tree however, there was too much going on so needless to say we played in the creek instead(sorry, Sara). She loved the water! Later she helped me shop for groceries at the local Ingles store. We built a fire and waited for Summer to arrive but due to some lack of map reading skills from the co-pilots, they did not arrive until almost midnight. Friday was a very enjoyable day. Summer, Sydney and I took a long walk after breakfast. Luke and Ryan decided to go on an overnight hike and left about 10:00 am. Summer and I busied ourselves with the duties of securing the campsites, setting up camp and going to the grocery store again. That evening we had delicious roasted hotdogs with all the works. We took a long walk with Sydney and were going to go listen to bluegrass @ the ice cream parlor but were just too tired. So Sydney, Summer, Maddux and I retired to our nice cozy tent. About 11:30 that evening I heard someone rustling around in our kitchen. I was almost ready to hollow at whoever it was to get away from our stuff when I realized it was Luke and Ryan. They had gotten rained on and had decided to come on back from their hike. On Saturday we anxiously awaited the arrival of Auntie, Chris, Chesed, Charis, Tony and kids and the Jacksons with the boys. While waiting Ryan and Luke reluctantly put a tarp over our kitchen area. Everyone arrived and we had just about gotten things put away when it began to rain again. Quickly we threw tarps over everything we could and all gathered under the kitchen tent. We were beginning to think we were not going to survive without Papa there to get the tarps up. That night it rained off and on so the next day the guys were ready to put up the rest of the tarps. They did a great job and we no longer had to worry about the rain. It did rain off and on throughout the weekend. It also turned off cold. Colder than I can remember it being in many, many years. We later heard that we had had a record low of 47. Ma, those blankets and extra jackets you always bring sure would have come in handy. The meals this year were outstanding!!! It is amazing how many great cooks we have in our family. We really should start a catering buisness for campers. Of course, Samuel thinks we should hire someone to do all the cooking/cleaning. Hey Brenda and I will gladly accept tips anytime!!! Ha Ha!! We had fried green tomatoes with goat cheese along with corn fritters and succotash. Tony definitely receives the award for being the BEST Sous Chef. He was in the kitchen helping with prep every night and those fried pickles were scrumpous! Josh's salad was beautiful and quite tasty not to mention the roasted sweet potatoes and vegetable medley that accompanied the superb marinated roast he fixed with the help of Sous Chef, Luke. Summer and Josh's chili/fritos/hotdogs were a big hit and of course the Mexican night was yummy as always. A very special thank you to the Jacksons for that delicious meal. Charis and Tony were able to use up some of Josh's left over roast and fixed some Taco Soup that really hit the spot and according to Jon it works well as a colon cleanse. (Don't read this, Ashley) The kids helped out with dinner on Thursday by catching some huge trout. Tony and Ryan cleaned and cooked them. Auntie came up with a new recipe for hushpuppies, some more grilled veggies and Josh's salad went great with the trout! As we were all breaking camp on Friday evening, Auntie was resourceful and made grilled sandwiches using the rest of the lunch meat and cheese. We had very little food leftovers. Later that evening Jake and Amber brought us a pizza from town. Every meal was completed with a trip to the ice cream parlor. I think their sales for the week trippled!!! Thanks to Luke, Ryan, Summer, Tony, Charis and anyone else who helped by herding the kiddos. Yes, we did do other things besides eat. After hearing from Ryan and Luke what a breathtaking view it was from the Noland Divide, the women of the the camp accompanied by Mr. Jackson and Maddux decided to hike up and see for ourselves. But you know us (LOST was named after our family)... We made just one wrong turn(I think someone forgot to mention something about a sign). After over an hour hiking we came to a graveyard and a deadend trail. We ate lunch, posed for pictures and headed back down without finding the view. We did lots of tubing, some went white water rafting, played Mexican dominoes, watched the children, and sat by the fire. But some things were just not the same. We missed Sara, Chara and Judah terribly and the absence of Ma and Papa was almost unbearable at times. Not a single game of Rook was played, in fact we never got around to even putup the game tent. The piemakers were used for shovels, the kitchen tarp was used as a tent cover and I am not sure how many showers were taken at the cabin but lets just say I hope Greg has a DEEP well. All the snacks were eaten in record time and we did not buy enough bacon but the Bryson City sausage was delicious as usual. We bought and ate the candy from the Schuler's Market and meant to send some for you, Ma, but not sure if it ever made it. Overall I think everyone had a good time. They really enjoyed the new Corn Hole game. I am not sure who ended up being the champions but I heard Uncle Chris was pretty good. Spit baths were given and s'mores were made. Auntie and Jake took the kids on lots of bike rides. Summer took the kids for many wagon rides and Karin and Charis were great at keeping up with the babies. The kids were GREAT and helped with clean up after supper each night. We had 28 attendees(12 of which were 11 and under) so needless to say things got a little hectic at times, we sure could have used some extra eyes but we did return home with each precious one accounted for. I especially enjoyed my special time with Summer and Sydney hiking and setting up camp. She and Josh were a tremendous help with the children. Thanks, Josh for staying late on Tuesday. The tubing trip from the top with my boys was another highlight of my trip. Every year I think, I really can't go from the top but they always encourage me to do it and it is always so much fun. Tubing with Landon, Parker and Bryce from the second bridge was fun, too. On Friday Auntie, Norman, Jon, Ashley, and I decided to try again for the Noland divide. It was a 3 mile hike...straight up!!!!!! It took us about 2 hours to get to the top but we did it!!! At ages 57, 56 and 54 we felt quite proud of ourselves for this accomplishment. We could not have done it without the support and encouragement from our children. Thanks for giving us the push to go. The view was definitely breathtaking and it just gave me the desire to hike again real soon. Thanks Ashley and Jon for tagging along with the old folks. The conversation helped pass the time and take our minds off the trek. Some of us enjoyed shopping in Bryson City/Cherokee and the late night fireworks in town. There were many coffee runs each morning. We had a huge slumber party at the cabin on Friday night before everyone departed. Everyone really pitched in to get everything done and I appreciate so much everyone's efforts to come. A special thanks to the Jackson's for bringing the boys and helping so much with the children and taking our group pictures. Thanks to Tony and Charis for making the T shirts. Karin thanks for the Kids Olympic Games. Thanks to Brenda for all her hard work in getting everything together and traveling such a distance to get there. Sydney Goes to Bradford

This weekend Norman and I took a trip to Bradford for Father's Day. It is always great to spend time with Meme and Papa. We were able to deliver the medals we had framed for Papa and I think he was pleased. Norman's cousin, Peggy, from Michigan was there visiting on Friday night. She comes each year and does deep cleaning for Meme, washes curtains, windows, cleans baseboards, etc. Thanks, Peggy for all of your hard work. Meme was doing well and everyone enjoyed watching Sydney. This was a first for Norman and I (to take Sydney on a road trip) Let me clearify that this was entirely Norman's idea and before we were through ATL he was comtemplating turning around. We did get stuck in a little Friday morning rush hour traffic. After about 45 mins. of fussing she went to sleep and the rest of the time she was GREAT! However, Norman decided to drive the rest of the way. You know how that goes, Ryan. We really enjoyed our visit and being grandparents. You should have seen Norman walking around Sonic with her. Thanks Sara and Ryan for allowing us to take her. It was so much fun. Enjoy the pics.

A Tribute to the man with the...

"W" What can I say about this man that I call my dad???? I am not sure that there is enough room on this blog so I will keep it simple...I love my daddy!

Throughout my life he has always been there to help me out,
His love for me I have no doubt.
He built it, fixed it,made it right,
He even took me floundering in the middle of the night.
With just two girls with which to begin,
His quiver multiplied again and again.
Each one has memories with which he made,
He taught them much from all his trades.
One of his specialties there's no mistake,
Is the camping trip to Deep Creek which we like to make.
He ties the tarps above our tents,
And then a cabin he does rent.
With a "W" all his things are labeled,
You'll find him playing Rook at the picnic table.
He gathers firewood from abandoned sites,
Then guards it carefully in the night.
No one can tie a knot like him,
Or loop a rope across a limb.
He's quite a amazing to us all,
And that's why we agree he is the best PaPa.
